Dear BOLD UNIQ-ERS,
Regrettably, we at Bold Uniq have to inform you that we have not been able to supply Ocean Waste Plastic (OWP) packaging, in which we defined as plastic recovered from the oceans and recycled into our bottles and jars. Our packaging supplier made us aware of this situation and have also informed us that they cannot guarantee that the packaging they provided us with contains plastic from the oceans. We are deeply disappointed and know that we have let our customers down. We are however happy to confirm that we did manage to include other recycled plastics in our packaging, and although it’s not to the extent we hoped, we have still been contributing a positive impact to our planet.
We knew this was an ambitious project, especially for a start-up hair care brand, but we had vision, we wanted to be industry disrupters, we wanted to push the boundaries and have unfortunately come up short. We were assured by our supply chain that they would be able to meet the promises made, and we had full confidence. We understand it was a massive project for them too and have to thank them for their efforts and honesty.
The harsh realities are forcing us to accept the fact that this task is difficult to uphold and sustain. There are a whole host of issues along the supply chain—the collection process is daunting and not always secure, the quality is wildly inconsistent, and this does not provide a foundation to give Bold Uniq a solid supply chain to meet customer demand. Covid has also unfortunately restricted travel and inspection possibilities.
We are not going to give up on our goal of removing plastics from our waters. We are going to use this situation to even further better ourselves, and later this year we will start removing plastics from our oceans and rivers, through a fully documented process. In doing so, we are going to make our bottles and jars from recycled plastic (PCR - Post Consumer Resin) and for each bottle we make, we are also going to remove plastic from our oceans and rivers at a 1:1 ratio. We do not have this in place yet, it’s going to take some time, and we want to make sure we do it right. We’ll fully communicate with you when we get there.
We are already using recycled cardboard for our boxes, our gloves are fully biodegradable, and the post-consumer resin used in our packaging already sold gives a small sense of satisfaction that we have been consciously contributing towards the future of our planet for our children, and grandchildren to come. But we won’t stop here, we’ll keep pushing. We have some more environmentally friendly projects in the works, so watch this space.
I’d like to personally thank all our customers and fans for their support so far, we work incredibly hard trying to compete against the large international haircare brands and will continue to do so in the future to make our planet a better place for us all.
